Background

Where the Neighbourhood Began

The Rudolf-Bednar-Park area was the first part of the Nordbahnviertel to be developed as a genuine residential neighbourhood. Guided by the 1994 master plan, construction began in the early 2000s. One of the first projects was this park — designed as a social anchor for the new community.

The 1994 master plan set ambitious goals: mixed-use buildings, public green space, connections to the surrounding Leopoldstadt district, and integration of different income groups. The plan envisioned a typical Viennese "Nutzungsmischung"a blend of living, working, shopping, and social infrastructure in close proximity.

Around 7,500 apartments have been completed across the Nordbahnviertel so far. A Bildungscampus — the Gertrude-Fröhlich-Sandner campus with school and kindergartenhas been operating here for more than a decade. Subsidised and privately financed housing stand side by side.

But the reality took time. Large-scale urban development doesn't produce a neighbourhood overnight. Parks need people. Shops need foot traffic. Social fabric needs years to form.

Look around this park. It's now the social heart of the district. What do you notice about how people use it?
